Barclaycard Credit Card Expand Contactless Payment Services
Those wishing to use contactless credit card technology will be able to pay for higher-value transactions.
A similar scheme was set up last year, using mobile phones payments to simplify small payments.
Barclaycard credit card consumers will now be able to use contactless payments to pay for a greater value of items.
Moves by the organisation have seen it extend the limit of transactions that can be paid via the contactless technology in debit and credit cards from £10 to £15.
Under the system, people simply pass their contactless-enabled cards over a terminal to pay for goods and services and with more than six million such Barclaycard products currently in circulation a significant number of people could be able to take advantage of such credit offers.
Money is still withdrawn from their current account or charged to their card as with traditional chip and pin transactions.
The firm pointed out last December that some 20,000 outlets – including 380 branches of Caffe Nero – accept contactless payments.
“The new higher limit gives customers the flexibility of paying for even more transactions quickly, securely and conveniently via a contactless card payment and will lead to more retailers implementing the technology,” Brian Cunnington, head of debit cards for Barclays, comments.
Barclaycard is planning to launch its new reward schemethis week.
Under the bank’s Reward Money scheme, borrowers will be able to earn reward points every time they use their credit card to fund a transaction.
Earning a standard one per cent return, these points can be redeemed to get money off products and services at a number of national retailers and restaurants, including Gourmet Burger Kitchen, npower and Goldsmiths.
Pizza Express, LA Fitness and Flight Centre are also among the partners to have signed up to the credit offers programme, due to be launched tomorrow (March 17th), which Barclaycard claims is “set to be the broadest retail rewards scheme in the UK”.
With the initiative available to eight million Barclaycard customers, a number of exclusive promotions and discounts will also be offered.
Recently, the bank revealed that the maximum spending limit of transactions that can be paid for using its contactless technology is to rise from £10 to £15.
